More about SHUGUROVA Galina:
Galima Shugurova was the third representative of the ex-Soviet Union to become world all around champion after Ludmila Savinkova(1963) and Elena Karpouchina (1967) and the first ever European All around champion in 1978. When she first appeared at the world stage in Varna (Bulgaria) 1969 she was only 14 years old, looking tiny and as fragile as a piece of china porcelain. At the end of her debute she had two gold medals for rope and ball.

Four years later Galima was already a mature beautiful youny lady with enormous charisma and unbelievable standard of gymnastics. In Rotterdam (NED) 1973 she shared the world crown with the Bulgarian Maria Guigova. Funnily enough, both of them executed in this Championships ribbon exercises on one and the same music - a piece of Bizet-Stchedrin’s ballet "Carmen".

Shougourova was a technically perfect gymnast with incredible charisma. It is hard to believe, but by the end of her career, when she was already an internationally recognized star, Galima had to prove this more often at home competitions rather than abroad. This is why the all around European title in Madrid'78 really gave her the greatest satisfaction of her life.
