|More about DITYATIN Alexander:|
|Alexander, known as the Gentle Giant was born in the former city of Leningrad where he has lived all his life.
He was a placid, awkward, roundshouldered boy, so his parents took him to a gymnastics school when he was eight to see whether his physique could be improved.
In due course, he joined the leading Leningrad Dynamo Club. Here, his coach Anatoly Yarmovsky, developed the boy's skills slowly because his body began to grow rapidely when he was 15. At first his muscles could not support his weight. He was very tall for a gymnast! This care paid off and Alexander became Soviet junior champion in 1972.
He also made gymnastics history by being in 1980 in Moscow, the first male to score a perfect 10 on the rings.
Sadly, injury ended his career the next year. Alexander got married and became a sports teacher, training youngsters. By 1983 he had a son, but little has been heard of him on the international scene since that time. Gymstars - September 93.
