|A mask of iron!
For a long time the Russian style and school opposed the exeuberant and joyous Japanese school. For a long time, too, the Russians were admired while the Japanese aroused intense enthusiasm. Here were clinical gymnastics face to face with a spontaneous and renewable creation.
Boris Chakhline, a child of Omsk in Siberia, was transfered in much the same way as his peer, Yuri Titov, from that virgin territory to the more elaborated soil of purely Russian biomechanics which had become the symbol of precise, measured, almost predictable movement. His was a mask and a will of iron; he was also the sole winner of four gold medals at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome. He is undoubtely the most decorated gymnast of all time alongside the greatest of the Japanese.
It is Chakhline who first proved the importance of concentration in gymnastics and mental rehearsal; going through the routine, seconds before a decisive performance. The ability to shut himslef from the world and his extraordinary stability of performance (nobody recalls ever having seen Chakhline fall from an apparatus), earned him the name "The Iron Man", while he described himself as an "ordinary man".
Chakhline lost both his parents by the age of 12 and was brought up, together with his brother, by his grand parents in the small village of Ishim, in Tumen, near Omsk. His unbelievable discipline and physical strength originate for sure from the tough life experience of Siberia. As example, at the Rome Olympics, Boris after his successful landing on high bar, he has been smiling, while his palm was covered with blood. Just before the routine his leather hand-guard 'stands by'! Chakhline shouted to his coach and went on performing!
Boris Chakhline was for many years Head Coach of the Ukrainian National Team, President of the Federation and member of the FIG's Mens' Technical Committee.vam.
