More about LI Ning:
Because of the 1980 Olympic boycott, Li Ning did not appear on the world scene until the 1981 World Championships. But already at his first appearance he placed 6th all-around and impressed the gymnastics world with his amazing technical quality and athleticism.

Less than one year later, he defeated each reigning apparatus world champion on his event at the 1982 World Cup in Zagreb, at which he easily won the all around title, with an average score of over 9.90 and won five gold and one bronze medal on the apparatus. In the preliminary round, he accomplished the impossible - he had placed first on each apparatus.

He succesfully defended his World Cup title in 1986.

In the other world level events - the Olympic Games and the World Championships - he continued to astonish the gymnastics world with the technical virtuosity and amplitude of his performances. Although he won 4 gold medals in Los Angeles (1984), he always made at least one major mistake in these competitions and that was enough to keep him away from the coveted all around titles.

In 1992, he judged his first World Championship and was elected to the FIG Men's Technical Committee that same year. In his personal life he is married and a father, is the owner of a major sports clothing business and is
presently studying business law.H.Fink.

Many Gymnastics specialists describe Li Ning as "the most perfect male gymnast" they have ever seen. He was recognized as the "absolute all-arounder", capable of achieving myximum score on any apparatus. His rivalry with Yuri Korolev at the time created real booming in the sport, but both of them were excellent example of fair-paly towards each other.

Li NIng took up gymnastics at the age of 8. Both his parents were teachers ans as s child his dream was to become a teacher too. He has an older brother and a younger sister. V. Atkinson.
