More about KATO Sawao:
Sawao Kato epitomized the technical and mental strength and the total commitment to the team effort of the Japanese men's team of the 1960's and 70's.

He had no weaknesses on any apparatus and became an Olympic finalist on all apparatus and a medalist on five of the apparatus.
Moreover, he came very very close to winning three consecutive Olympic all around titles and of course was instrumental in helping Japan win those three Olympic team titles.

Interestingly he was never able to complete a World Championship.

He was injured in 1970 and in 1974 dislocated his shoulder during a fall from the horizontal bar. His team commitment became evident at that time when, before a doctor could reach him, he swung his arm around in circles a few times jumped back up to the bar and tried to complete his exercise.

His comittment gymnastics has continued into his adult life where, as a judge, he has represented Japan at 13 FIG competitions and was elected to the FIG Men's Technical Commitee as 1st vice-president in 1992.h.fink.

Sawao retired at 31 years of age to be remembered as one of the greatest ever stylists and perfect "all-arounders". v.atkinson.
