He started gymnastics at the age of 5, when he was chosen in a kindergarten in his home town of Voronej. His father was really happy and said "that's great - they will make a man out of him". His mother was upset, for she had dreams for her son to be a scholar. As a young boy, Nikolai used to read poetry, but now he has no time. He was a member of the Olympic champion Russian team in Atlanta, and at the 1997 World Championships he won a silver medal on vault. His favourite apparatus is pommel horse, and he most admires the work of Valentin Mogilny on this event.
