More about BONDARENKO Alexei:

At that time, 19-year old Alexei made a dramatic entrance to world class gymnastics at the1997 Championships in Lausanne (SUI) by winning the silver medal in the All-around and the bronze with the team. He went on wining two others worlds medal (1999 team, 1999 parallel bars). He is a two-time Olympic medalist in 2000 winning silver in the all-around and bronze in the team;

He was overlooked for the 1996 Olympic team by selectors who doubted that he could handle the Olympic pressure; Made his international debut at the 1995 World Cup Challenge in Canada winning bronze in the all-around; Began gymnastics at age 8, had his first competition at 9, and by age 15 he had moved to live and train at the National Training Center at Round Lake just outside of Moscow; Most inspired by Nikolay ANDRYANOV, Mikhail VORONIN, Vitaliy SCHERBO and Aleksey NEMOV.

His routines contain spectacular skills - and sometimes spectacular crashes... His gymnastics may be daring and extrovert, but outside the gym, Alexi is very quiet and shy.

Born in Kystanai, a town in the former Soviet republic of Kazakhstan; Father Pyotr is a crane operator; Mother Maria is a private school cook; Has a sister Irina, and a brother Vyacheslav; Nickname is Bondy. Outside the gym, Alexei likes to read books, watch films and listen to music. He also enjoys a spot of skiing whenever he has the opportunity. His long term goals are to become a world or Olympic champion and the leader of the Russian team. Alexei may be shy, but he can also be sly - "one of my hobbies is collecting medals!" he says.

He was born in Kystanai, a town in the former Soviet republic of Kazakhstan and began gymnastics at the age of eight. His mother was not very happy that he was doing gymnastics at the beginning. When he really started taking it seriously, all his family supported him. When he was chosen to attend Round Lake training center in Moscow at the age of 15, he had to say goodbye to his family in Kazakhstan and start to live the life of a professional gymnast.
