On June 19th, 1988, a Chinese gymnast meets a Swiss tourist in Beijing. It's the beginning of a love story and a new sports career for an exceptionnal athlete.

Donghua starts gymnastics at 7 year old. In 1983 he comes to Beijing at the national training center. In 1984 he is seriously injured on the vault, he loses a lot of blood during a medical operation. Since then he has been living without a spleen and with only one kidney.

In 1986, he tears both Achilles' tendons. After several weeks in wheelchair, Donghua becomes national champion in 1987 on pommel horse.

In 1988, he meets the swiss Esperanza Friedli and gets married the same year.

Donghua leaves China for Switzerland and arrives in Luzern where he meets the former Olympic Champion ,in 1948, Josef Stalder. In 1989 he takes part to the Swiss Championships. He wins the gold on pommel horse but not the national title, according to new regulations !

On March 1994, Donghua receives the Swiss passport and starts a new career under the Swiss flag.

On the pommel horse, he becomes World Champion in Sabae 1995, and Olympic Champion in Atlanta 1996, at 30 years old ! Then, Donghua decides to retire from the high level competition.
