More about GODUNKO Nataliia:
Natalia Godunko was born on the 5th of December 1984. Nowadays, she is the 3rd gymnast of Ukraine and sometimes even gets better ranked than the leaders - Anna Bessonova and Tamara Yerofeeva. However, her way to the stars was thorny. She suffered a lot in her life, but managed it well to get over it. The reason why she excels on the floor could be because she expresses her full soul in the routine. She first started to train at the rhythmic gymnastics school close to her home and after she joined the famous Deruigins school. Natalia at first didn't differ from the other girls in the school and Deruigins didn't notice her for a while - she was not tall, she didn't have long legs, which was preferred by Deruigins. But then, they quickly saw what Natalia was able to do with her speed and magnificent technique with apparatus and on elements. She competed as a junior in 1998 on the World Youth Games in Moscow and took a very good 6th place. She missed the World Team Championships (Aeon Cup) that year, because Anna Bessonova was a little stronger than her in junior category. 1999 was the first time Natalia took part in a senior category and in 2000 she started to compete in a Grand Prix series, it was the "Deruigina Cup". Natalia took the 16th place, which was a good start for a progressing gymnast. The same year she even managed to win a prestigious competition in Prague - "Sokol Cup". That was the start of her great carreir.

In 2001 she competed again in the Grand Prix series on Deruigina Cup, but this time she took the 5th place ! This event was the second competition for her under the new COP. The first one was in San Fransisco, where she took 3rd place after Irina Tschaschina and Olga Andreyeva. On Ukrainian Nationals in 2001 she took her usual 3rd place in all-round and managed to beat Anya and Toma at the rope, receiving her second individual gold medal (first one was on Ukrainian National 2000 - gold with hoop). At the European Championships in Geneva Natalia Godunko won her first medal in such a high category - the Ukrainian Team was 2nd with the clubs. After this quite sensational medal of the Ukrainian team, Natalia was concentratesdon the individual routines and prepared herself for the World Championships in Madrid. Before to fly to Spain there was a control training in Kiev, which Natalia won in front of Toma and Anya. At the Worlds, Godunko iperformed 2 routines - with ball and rope. She haven't done any mistakes with them and was really loved by the audience. In 2002, she came with sensational news after the disquallification of Alina Kabaeva and Irina Tschaschina. That meant for Natalia that she automatically became the World Champion in team events. She was very happy of course, but started to work even more harder to show that she had really earned the medal.

In 2002 Natasha competes on most Grand Prix competitions, showing good-results there, but unfortunately she could never proceed into the finals because of the strong Yerofeeva and Bessonova. In summer Natasha competed on World Championships in New Orleans and wins gold medal for ribbon routine. Not just she, whole Ukrainian group was very happy for the results. However, having spent a few weeks with her aunt, who lives in the USA, she continues to work, continues to show her stability. Before European Championships there is again a control training and Natasha was 2nd there after only Anna Bessonova. On European Championships in Granada she did rope routine and won silver medal in team event. 2003 is the year of Natalia Godunko. For the first time in her life she did her first Grand Prix final with ball on Deruigina Cup, then hoop and ribbon on Holon Grand Prix and ribbon on Berlin Grand Prix. She did very well on Ukrainian Nationals 2002, winning bronze in all-round and all gold medals in the finals. However, Anya and Toma didn't compete there. Natasha also is again the leader of Ukrainian Group, bringing it gold in the all-round of Ukrainian Games. Natasha did very well on European Gymnastics Team Championships. She contributed a lot to the silver medal of Ukraine there. Her performance with the best gymnasts of the world should also help Natalia's growing masterpiece. Natasha is able to perform all five exercises with a ball, ribbon, hoop, clubs and rope, she is technical and floppy, her jumps are high and dynamical, pirouettes are fast and beautiful. She is able to perform one of the most difficult elements in RG - triple illusion. We all hope that this Ukrainian gymnast will show her best on the World Championships in Budapest.

Just a few years ago Natalia Godunko was known only by the specialists and professionalists of rhythmic gymnastics, but nowadays she is one of the most progressing gymnasts in the world, who improves her style, polishes her compositions from competition to competition. Natasha's extremely hard-working at trainings and stoical at competitions that helps her achieve the top results. It is obvious that her main achievements are in future, but even nowadays she impresses the audience with an unusual gymnastics style and remarkable hair style. "A reddish imp" is her nickname that suits her perfectly and depicts her marvelous qualities. Natasha's unusual interpritation of the "Matrix" and "5th elements" are her distinctive features. She is different and that is what makes her distinguish between all other gymnasts. /UKR
